Shore Hardness Meter

Shore hardness meters are used for measuring the resistance of plastics using a Shore A or D scale test to provide an empirical hardness value. Shore A testing is typically used when testing soft plastics such as rubber, polyolefins and vinyls, whereas Shore D testing is preferred for measuring much harder plastics.

Shore hardness is measured with a tool known as a Durometer, and may also be know through the term durometer hardness. The hardness value can be determined when the durometer's indenter foot penetrates into the sample. Due to the resilience of rubbers and plastics, the indentation reading my change over time, as a result, the indentation time is sometimes reported along with the hardness number.
