Polarising microscopes are used for a wide variety of applications in geology, medical and metallurgical analysis. This type of microscope uses polarised light to examine microfossils, crystal structures, plant and artificial fibres as well as other materials. Polarising microscopes employ a host of optical techniques as a way of monitoring image contrast and colour change, such as directly illuminating a sample with polarised light or using an orientated polariser in order to block transmitted light.
